Narrative transmission as threshold concept in literature classes (NarraTeach)

This project is being carried out in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Dorothee Wieser (HU Berlin).
The NarraTeach project focuses on the question of how narratological knowledge can be modelled and prepared for literature teaching in such a way that it supports the understanding of narrative texts. The project thus addresses a twofold problem: On the one hand, there is currently no clear, consistent ‘translation’ of narratological knowledge for practical use in schools. On the other hand, narrative analysis in schools often remains an end in itself.
In NarraTeach, we consider narrative transmission to be a central feature of narratives. We assume that reflecting on narrative transmission fundamentally changes the understanding of narratives in literature and in everyday life. Based on this, we propose a model for analysing narrative transmission. This model aims to bridge the gap between specialist narratological knowledge and knowledge that is relevant for promoting an understanding of literary texts in educational contexts. The model is characterised by the combination of three features: (1) hierarchisation of categories in narrative text analysis (who narrates? –> how? –> what?), (2) use of questions, rather than abstract terms, to stimulate understanding, (3) linking of the three levels of analysis: How does the narrative transmission influence our understanding of what is narrated? The project is designed as a research cycle that combines theoretical, empirical and transfer-oriented approaches. The theoretical foundation, the empirical investigation of narrative text analysis skills among prospective teachers and the initial development of a practical programme have been completed. Currently, scientific support and investigation of the transfer into practice are on the agenda.
